On behalf of all editorial board members from the Journal of Applied Bioanalysis, I welcome you to the journal’s sixth volume. As done in the past years, I’ll start this foreword article with taking the opportunity wishing all of you a healthy and successful 2020. A special “thank you” is going out to all authors, and reviewers, as well to the members of the journal’s editorial board for their continued professional support. I hope that the year 2020 will hold for your success and good fortune in any endeavor you will pursue in 2020. I’ll like to use this foreword article to reflect on the last year, which was for us an important year since for heaving reached the journal’s fifth anniversary.

Journal highlights

Betasciencepress Publishing, publisher of the journal has since the launch of the journal in 2015, continuously supported initiatives on Open Access Publishing and Open Science and will keep doing so in the future. We know that it is important that peer reviewers should be compensated for their extremely important work they do. Therefore, we’ve strengthen our collaboration with ReviewerCredits.com last year.
The journal presented in collaboration with Dr. Giacomo Bellani (co-founder and president of ReviewerCredits) a highly successful webinar on how ReviewerCredits can help peer-reviewers to get the most out of their unrepleacable role in science.
The journal will also keep offering in 2020 the APC discount program (-30%) for members of ReviewCredits for registered Journal of Applied Bioanalysis manuscript reviews at ReviewerCredits.
Another successful webinar was presented by Dr. Kwasi Antwi (Thermo Fisher Scientific, USA) on the Bioanalysis of Small and Large Biological Molecules: Improving Selectivity, Sensitivity and Reproducibility.

Also in 2020, the journal will keep looking for interesting topics for webinars and I would like to kindly to invite members of the bioanalysis community to contact the editorial office if you would like to present a webinar on any topic from the field of bioanalysis.

Special focused issues: call for proposals

The editorial office invites scientists and scholars to submit a proposal for a special focused issue. The purpose of the special focused issue is to provide the bioanalysis community with a collection of articles on a specific topic. Ideally, the topic should not have been covered substantially by the journal and should have a great potential of being of high interest to the bioanalysis community.
For the sixth volume the special focused issue proposals submission deadlines are due on May 1, 2020 and October 1, 2020. Proposals will be competitively evaluated by the journal’s senior editorial team.

Journal of Applied Bioanalysis facts

The Journal of Applied Bioanalysis aims to publish high-quality articles presenting recent developments and applications in bioanalysis. In contrast, to other journals in the area of bioanalysis (bioanalytical chemistry), all articles are published with the Open Access option (CC BY).
The journal has the lowest APC fee of all journals publishing in the area of this exciting sub-area of analytical chemistry. In an era that open science and freely available scientific information are becoming as well more important, as more demanding, the journal is supporting Open Access publishing for the past four years and will keep doing this for the many years to come.
Currently, the mean time from manuscript submission to first decision in the Journal of Applied Bioanalysis is about 18-25 days. The mean time from manuscript submission to final decision is less than 45 days, which is attributed to the rapid editorial processing of the papers upon receipt of the manuscript.

Demographics of author and reader audience

The journal’s website received in 2019 significant more article views/downloads, the annual article views/downloads increased by 32 % compared to views/downloads obtained in 2018.
The Journal of Applied Bioanalysis has experienced a continued growth of views/downloads from around the globe. The majority of the article views/downloads originated from visitors located in the Americas (37.2%) and Europe (29.9%) while also article views/downloads from other continents were observed while the majority of the article views/downloads are still coming from visitors using desktop computers (77.7%). Mobile views count for 20.3% and tablet for only 2.0% of the article views/downloads.

The journal’s presence on social media

Social media is a great tool for informing and keeping the general bioanalysis community up-to-date on new developments, journal related news, conduct surveys, announce upcoming webinars and many more and at last but not least for reaching out to scientists interested in the exciting field of bioanalysis.
The journal is active on social media platforms like LinkedIn (Journal of Applied Bioanalysis group), Twitter (@JABeditor), and on Facebook. Using different social media platforms provides the journal with the possibility to provide its followers with the latest journal updates, news or other interesting information related to bioanalysis.

Launch of Science-Zone.net

In 2019 Betasciencepress Publishing launched the new Science-Zone.net blog website. This website will present interactively on-line resources from and for the bioanalysis community. Science-Zone acts as a platform for the bioanalysis community to discuss recent developments in the field of bioanalysis as well provide the bioanalysis community with a place to pose/answer questions posted by members of the bioanalysis community. The membership is completely free or charge. I highly recommend you to take a look at the website and register with Science-Zone. Registration will provide you with free news, updates and much more directly delivered into your email inbox.

Restyled Betasciencepress-Publishing website

The Journal of Applied Bioanalysis can now be found on a completely new restyled publisher website. The new website provides visitors of the website and journals an improved surfing experience. Furthermore, the website looks more professional and has a modern look adapted to this time and ensures that visitors find the information they are looking for easily and quickly.

I appreciate all the positive feedback the journal received last year but also over the past years as well as the great ideas for improvement of the journal and author services. The feedback and support will be used to further improve the quality of the journal, and in making the Journal of Applied Bioanalysis, the Open Access journal in the field of Bioanalysis.
